Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn and Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) Secretary Nancy A. Walker visited the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps crew at Kings Gap Environmental Education Center in Cumberland County to mark the program's 10th anniversary and highlight its growing impact on workforce development and environmental stewardship.
Since its creation, the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps has provided hands-on conservation job training for over 1,400 young people between the ages of 15 and 25. The program aims to help participants develop skills, prepare for careers, and improve public lands throughout Pennsylvania.
Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration has focused on expanding conservation efforts by strengthening workforce development through initiatives like the Outdoor Corps. The Governor’s proposed bipartisan budget for fiscal year 2024-25 includes a $5 million investment to enhance and expand this program. This funding will be used to hire more staff and restructure the program into a regional model intended to make operations more efficient, increase recruitment efforts, and build stronger partnerships with communities.
