Governor Josh Shapiro visited the Community Education Center in West Philadelphia to discuss the effects of state investments in violence prevention. He met with students, teachers, community leaders, and elected officials, focusing on the work of Beyond the Bars, a nonprofit that supports youth through music and leadership programs.
Beyond the Bars has expanded its efforts due to more than $530,000 in funding from Pennsylvania’s Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) program. The VIP program is managed by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and supports over 130 initiatives statewide.
Governor Shapiro stated his administration has made public safety a priority since taking office. He highlighted that resources have been directed both to law enforcement agencies and organizations like Beyond the Bars that aim to reduce violence in communities.
“From day one, Governor Shapiro has prioritized public safety and delivered historic resources to both law enforcement and community-based organizations working to reduce violence. Beyond the Bars is one of more than 130 initiatives across Pennsylvania supported through the Commonwealth's Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) program, administered by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD).”
The Governor’s visit underscores ongoing efforts by state officials to address crime rates while creating opportunities for young people in Philadelphia and other parts of Pennsylvania.
