The School District Redistricting Taskforce has started its work following the passage of Act 73 last month. The law requires the Task Force to propose up to three new school district maps, each with districts enrolling between 4,000 and 8,000 students. This could result in about 10 to 20 school districts across Vermont. The General Assembly is expected to vote on a proposal in 2026, and any approved map would take effect for the 2028-2029 school year.

The Task Force held its first meeting last week. Members elected co-chairs, discussed priorities, explored a mapping tool, listened to public input, and planned next steps. The Agency of Administration is managing the Task Force’s activities. Information about membership and meetings can be found on the Agency of Administration's Taskforce webpage: https://aoa.vermont.gov/redistricting-task-force.

In addition to redistricting efforts, several training opportunities are being offered for educators and support staff this month. A Nonviolent Crisis Intervention workshop will provide participants with decision-making skills tailored to crisis situations. The training emphasizes matching responses to risk levels while ensuring care and safety for all involved. Attendees will learn how to recognize escalating crises, use evidence-based de-escalation techniques, apply safe physical interventions when necessary, and foster safer learning environments. Registration closes August 11.

A separate two-hour webinar focused on de-escalation strategies for paraeducators and behavior interventionists is also available. This session aims to help staff build relationships with students and develop conflict resolution skills needed for those working with students requiring additional support. Participants will learn proactive methods for addressing self-defeating behaviors and fostering positive restorative relationships within schools. Registration ends August 12.

Additionally, a resource document titled "Family Engagement in Education Law" has been released by the Vermont Agency of Education. The document summarizes family engagement requirements under Vermont law and explains how the agency supports these efforts in schools statewide. It includes legal citations that guide regulations and expectations related to family engagement planning at various educational levels. More resources are available on the Parent, Family and Community Engagement web page: https://education.vermont.gov/student-support/family-community-engagement.

For further information about these initiatives or upcoming events, contacts have been provided for each area of interest.
