U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon will begin her national “Returning Education to the States” tour in Louisiana on August 11. The tour aims to highlight local education initiatives, gather input from educators and families, and focus on state-led strategies for student achievement.

Louisiana was chosen as the first stop due to recent improvements in its K–12 education system. Secretary McMahon is scheduled to join Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education, for school visits and roundtable discussions with local stakeholders.

“President Trump entrusted me with a vital mission to return education to the states, and part of that is learning best practices from each state,” said Secretary McMahon. “I am eager to hear directly from students, educators, and local leaders about the bold ideas that can propel success, while also exploring how we can ensure every family has the freedom to choose the educational path that best fits their child’s needs.”

Recent data show that Louisiana students have made notable progress on national assessments. The state improved its overall ranking from 49th in 2019 to 32nd in 2024 according to The Nation’s Report Card. Fourth graders in Louisiana have led national reading growth for two consecutive cycles and are now ranked 16th in reading nationwide. Additionally, the Education Recovery Scorecard ranks Louisiana first for reading recovery and second for math recovery among all states.

Dr. Brumley’s BRAVE plan outlines five key areas: Back to Basics, Redesign High Schools, Accelerate Parental Rights, Value Teaching Professionals, and Expand Education Freedom. These priorities are intended to address challenges unique to Louisiana while building on recent gains.

The “Returning Education to the States” tour is part of President Trump’s initiative for greater state control over education policy and increased parental choice regarding children’s schooling options.
