The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has distributed over $4.5 million in federal funding to 196 elementary schools across the state. The funds, provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), are intended to increase access to fresh produce for students, especially in schools with higher populations of low-income families.

According to MSDE, the initiative supplies a variety of fruits and vegetables at no cost to students. The program aims not only to provide healthy snacks but also to support school-based nutrition education efforts.

"Program provides students access to a variety of fresh produce, building lifelong healthy eating habits," the department stated.

More details about the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program can be obtained by contacting Jill Hann at the MSDE Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs or by visiting www.eatsmartmaryland.org for additional information on Child Nutrition Programs.
