Dr. Carey Wright State Superintendent | Maryland Department Of Education
The Maryland State Board of Education is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, August 26, at the Nancy S. Grasmick State Education Building in Baltimore. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the Board Room on the seventh floor.
The agenda includes a review of the 2024–2025 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) results, which measure student performance statewide in core academic subjects. The Board will also consider a resolution and presentation about cell phone use in schools, focusing on its impact on student engagement and school climate.
Deliberations are planned regarding Strategic Plan outcomes that track progress toward long-term goals for student achievement and system accountability. Representatives from the Maryland State Education Association and the Baltimore Teachers Union will participate in stakeholder engagement sessions to provide educator perspectives on current priorities and challenges.
Schools nominated for the U.S. Green Ribbon Schools Program will be recognized during the meeting for their achievements in sustainability, health, and environmental education.
Updates concerning chronic absenteeism and professional learning initiatives are also expected, reflecting ongoing efforts by the Maryland State Department of Education to support both student attendance and teacher development.
Public comment is welcomed both in person and virtually during meetings. Registration is capped at 15 participants—10 for morning sessions and five for afternoon sessions—on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested must register by completing an online form before Friday, August 22 at 11:59 p.m., with confirmed registrants being notified accordingly.
