First Lady Dawn Moore visited two elementary schools in Montgomery County on August 27, accompanied by Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey M. Wright and other local officials. The visits to Ritchie Park Elementary School and Cold Spring Elementary School were intended to reinforce the Moore-Miller administration’s focus on strengthening public education in Maryland.

Moore was joined by Maryland State Delegate Julie Palakovich-Carr, Montgomery County Councilmember Andrew Frierson, Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor, and members of the county’s Board of Education.

“While walking the halls and visiting classrooms today in Rockville, I was truly inspired by the excitement of our young students as they start the next chapter in their educational journey,” said First Lady Moore. “Our administration knows that our children are the future, and we remain committed to building a world-class public education system in Maryland that uplifts the hopes and dreams of every student.”

The school visits were part of an ongoing initiative led by Moore to highlight innovative teaching methods and environments throughout Maryland’s public schools. She met with students, teachers, and administrators to discuss student engagement, community involvement, and academic achievement.

Dr. Carey M. Wright highlighted the importance of visible support for educators and students: “When we show up for our students, we send a powerful message that their education matters,” said Dr. Wright. “I’m proud to join First Lady Moore in recognizing the dedication of Montgomery County educators and the promise of our students. Together, we are building a future where every child has the opportunity to succeed.”

Moore’s office is working with state and local partners to ensure schools remain safe and inclusive spaces for all students. Her broader efforts also include promoting children’s mental health, advancing educational equity, and supporting community programs across Maryland.

According to recent reports, this year marks the third consecutive year of record investments in K-12 education within Maryland, totaling nearly $10 billion allocated for public schools statewide. Additionally, new legislation—the Excellence in Maryland Public Schools Act—was enacted this year to expand debt-free pathways into teaching careers and establish coaching models for educators focused on math and reading instruction.

Maryland students have shown improvement on national math and reading assessments over recent years; there has been significant progress especially among fourth-grade reading scores.
