The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) has announced a new statewide initiative to improve math education for K-8 students. Through the Palmetto Math Project, all schools in South Carolina will receive free access to Zearn Math, a digital learning platform, for the next five years.

The goal of the project is to have at least 75% of students performing at or above grade level in math by 2030. State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver said, “At the heart of the Palmetto Math Project is a bold but simple goal: to ensure every South Carolina student builds a strong foundation in math so they can reach their full, God-given potential. We’re committed to equipping our educators with the best tools available – and that’s why we’re thrilled to offer Zearn Math to schools across our state.”

Zearn Math offers over 1,000 interactive lessons aligned with South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Mathematics Standards. The platform supports classroom instruction as well as intervention, tutoring, and summer learning programs. It also provides real-time feedback for students and is available at no cost for families throughout the state.

“As a nonprofit built by teachers, we are honored to support South Carolina educators,” said Zearn CEO & Co-Founder Shalinee Sharma. “We know with the right support and belief in their potential, all kids can catch up and succeed in math.”

Zearn Math recently received a “Strong” (Tier 1) rating from Evidence for ESSA at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Research and Reform in Education. This top rating indicates that Zearn meets rigorous evidence standards set by federal law and is supported by research showing significant gains among students below proficiency levels.

This move reflects SCDE’s ongoing efforts to address learning gaps and provide educators with effective resources.
