Dr. Brian L. Maher, Commissioner | Nebraska Department of Education
The Nebraska Department of Education and the Nebraska Seal of Biliteracy Advisory Committee have announced that 122 Seals of Biliteracy were awarded to 118 high school students in August 2025. The Seal recognizes students who have demonstrated proficiency in English and at least one additional language, as measured by the Nebraska World Language Standards.
The awards highlight student achievement in languages including Chinese, French, German, Somali Maxaa, Spanish, and Tamil. The full list of recipients includes students from schools across the state such as Millard North High School, Lincoln High School, Omaha Central High School, and others.
According to the Nebraska Department of Education: "The Nebraska Seal of Biliteracy honors students who have embraced this vital skill, demonstrating their proficiency based on the Nebraska World Language Standards, which emphasize communication, cultures, connections, communities, and cognition within a language other than English."
Nebraska Wesleyan University has stated its recognition of the Seal as part of its support for continued language development. Starting with the 2025–26 academic year, incoming students at NWU who hold the Seal will be placed into higher-level courses and receive university credit for their proficiency. The university said: "This support affirms NWU’s dedication to valuing multilingual skills and providing equitable opportunities for students to advance their academic and professional success."
