Lance Evans, Mississippi Superintendent of Education | Mississippi Department of Education
The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has announced the 114 members of the 2025-26 State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council. The council is made up of high school juniors and seniors, as well as college freshmen attending a college or university in Mississippi.
Of the 114 members, 57 are new to the council this year. Among them are 10 students who were semifinalists for the State Board of Education Junior Representative position earlier in 2025. The remaining 57 students are returning from last year’s council.
Students selected for the council represent a range of backgrounds, schools, and regions across Mississippi. They will have opportunities to share their views and provide input on educational policy and opportunities with Dr. Lance Evans, state superintendent of education.
The Student Advisory Council was established by MDE in 2019. Each fall, applications open for new members. Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume, and responses to questions about their interest in serving on the council, their achievements, concerns about education, and academic goals. This year, nearly 200 students applied for membership.
According to MDE, “The council’s purpose is to provide a forum for Mississippi’s students to offer diverse perspectives to the State Superintendent of Education.” The department also stated that these students will serve as liaisons between MDE and public-school students statewide.
