Acting Secretary of Education Dr. Carrie Rowe attended an event at Lincoln Financial Field to announce the winners of the Governor's School Breakfast Challenge. The event, hosted in partnership with the American Dairy Association North East, featured Philadelphia Eagles alumnus Jason Avant, as well as cheerleaders and mascot SWOOP.
The top 10 schools with the highest participation in the second annual Governor's School Breakfast Challenge were named as the Commonwealth's Governor's Breakfast Champions. The challenge is a three-month initiative that recognizes schools for making lasting changes to their breakfast programs by including more nutritious and locally sourced foods, focusing on low-sugar options.
"Every child deserves to start the day ready to learn, and breakfast is a critical part of that routine," said Acting Secretary Rowe. "The Governor's School Breakfast Challenge shows that when schools innovate, whether with grab-and-go carts or breakfast in the classroom, we can remove barriers to learning and give students the healthy start to the day they need to succeed."
Speakers at the event included Dr. Carrie Rowe; Vonda Ramp, Pennsylvania State Director of Child Nutrition Programs; former Eagles wide receiver Jason Avant; and Dina Zug, a dairy farmer from Juniata County.
