The Louisiana Department of Education will receive an additional $13.5 million from the U.S. Department of Education to support charter schools in the state. This funding is part of a larger $500 million release through the Charter Schools Program (CSP), which marks the largest investment in the program to date. The new funds supplement the original $55 million previously awarded to Louisiana under this grant.

According to Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education, "Louisiana has proven that we can drive academic outcomes and expand opportunities when given the flexibility to innovate. We are grateful to President Trump and Secretary McMahon for taking action on their promise to return education to the states."

The CSP’s supplemental funding aims to address increased demand for charter schools in Louisiana. The Department plans to use these resources to support state priorities that have shown results in areas such as literacy, math, attendance, and readiness for college and careers.

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon stated, "A one-size fits all education system is not working for our students. Charter schools allow for innovative educational models that expand learning opportunities for students. The Trump Administration will continue to use every available tool to advocate for meaningful learning, advance school choice, and ensure every student is well-positioned to succeed."

The Louisiana Department of Education will distribute these funds through a competitive application process open to charter schools across the state. Details about how schools can apply will be provided later this year via the department’s website and newsletter.

The Charter Schools Program is designed to increase educational options by supporting more high-quality charter schools nationwide and empowering parents with greater choice over their children’s education.

Expanding school choice remains a priority in Louisiana, where families can select from traditional public schools, public charters, nonpublic institutions, or home study programs.
