Education leaders from South Carolina and Taiwan have formalized a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance international collaboration in K–12 education. The agreement aims to broaden classroom experiences and help students prepare for a more interconnected world.

The partnership will focus on several initiatives, including bringing qualified Mandarin teachers from Taiwan to teach in South Carolina schools, establishing sister-school partnerships for cultural understanding and collaborative projects, and promoting the exchange of educational programs, materials, and expertise through seminars, study groups, and conferences.

Superintendent Ellen Weaver commented on the significance of the partnership: “The people of Taiwan and South Carolina share a deep commitment to the ideals of freedom and self-government. This partnership represents a meaningful step toward preparing South Carolina students for the world they’ll lead,” said Superintendent Ellen Weaver. “I am excited to build bridges between our classrooms and those in Taiwan. These connections will spark curiosity, broaden perspectives, and empower our teachers and students with the knowledge and skills they need to build a bright future for our state, our nation, and the world.”

During her visit to Taiwan, Superintendent Weaver visited eight schools, one university, two municipal education bureaus, and the national Ministry of Education. She engaged with students, educators, and leaders to gain insights into Taiwan’s approach to bilingual and career-focused education.

This agreement builds on broader efforts between the United States and Taiwan. In December 2020, both countries launched the U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative. Since then, Taiwan’s Ministry of Education has signed 27 cooperation MOUs with 24 U.S. states.

Looking forward, the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) will collaborate with local districts to identify participation opportunities in these exchange programs. Both agencies plan annual evaluations to assess program outcomes and seek improvements.
