The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI), in collaboration with the North Dakota Center for Distance Education and the North Dakota National Guard, has received the Prairie Pheasant Flush Award at the Governor’s Public Service Awards. The recognition was given for launching what is described as the nation’s first fully operational, comprehensive military readiness program.

This initiative aims to help students better prepare for post-graduation life, especially those interested in pursuing a military career. The program was created after data indicated that not enough students were meeting the military component of the Choice Ready framework. Drawing on a similar model from another state, NDDPI and its partners tailored a solution specifically for North Dakota.

According to organizers, key achievements include creating a curriculum that aligns with military pathways, passing legislation to connect the program with state scholarship requirements, and securing legislative approval for a dedicated National Guard liaison.

Within two months of launch, two out of five planned courses are already available. Over 50 students have enrolled and are working toward National Guard service pathways.

A notable aspect of this program is that National Guard recruiters serve as embedded learning coaches. They provide support throughout student coursework and help establish an early connection between students and military service.

"The award recognizes the state’s launch of the nation’s first fully operational, comprehensive military readiness program, an initiative designed to better prepare students for life after graduation, particularly those pursuing a career in the military."
