The Louisiana Department of Education has announced the members of a new committee tasked with reviewing and updating the state's K-12 physical education standards. The committee, whose membership was approved by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), consists of teachers, education leaders, and community stakeholders. Their work will focus on enhancing the role of physical fitness in supporting student health and academic success.

“These committee members bring the passion and expertise we need to ensure Louisiana students gain the knowledge and skills for a successful and physically-fit life,” said Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education.

This review is part of Louisiana’s scheduled process to update content standards every seven years. The last review of physical education standards took place in 2017. The current effort aims to strengthen foundational movement skills across grade levels, ensure age-appropriate motor skill development, support high-quality instruction for all learners, and incorporate outcomes that promote lifelong health.

The revised standards are set to be presented to BESE in 2026, with statewide implementation expected for the 2027–2028 school year.

A total of 26 individuals were selected for the committee, which is divided into a steering committee, a K–5 grade-band workgroup, and a 6–12 grade-band workgroup. Members include educators from various grade levels, school system leaders, higher education faculty, parents or guardians, representatives from health organizations, and community members with experience in physical education.

Committee meetings will begin in late October 2025 at the Claiborne Building in Baton Rouge. All meetings are open to the public. Training for implementing any revised standards will take place during the 2026–2027 school year.

Dr. Brumley emphasized that broad participation and expertise were central to forming this group: “These committee members bring the passion and expertise we need to ensure Louisiana students gain the knowledge and skills for a successful and physically-fit life.”
