Dr. Maria Murray President & CEO | The Reading League

Maria Murray, president and CEO of The Reading League (TRL), has been named Nonprofit Executive of the Year by the CNY Business Journal. The award highlights her leadership and influence in promoting evidence-aligned reading instruction across the country.

The 18th CNY Business Journal Nonprofit Awards, sponsored by M&T Bank, will take place on March 26 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Syracuse. The event will honor nine leaders and organizations making a difference in Central New York.

Murray has led TRL from its start at her kitchen table to a national organization focused on literacy education. Her efforts have contributed to policy changes in 40 states and the District of Columbia, aligning literacy instruction with scientific research on reading.

Stephanie Finn, chairman of TRL’s board, said, “Maria is a visionary leader who has dedicated her career to transforming literacy education and advocating for every child’s right to read. Her unwavering commitment to the science of reading and her ability to inspire others has positioned The Reading League as a national force for positive change. We couldn’t be more proud of her well-deserved recognition.”

TRL now includes nearly 40 state chapters, employs over 30 staff members, and hosts an annual conference that draws more than 2,500 attendees worldwide.

Jill Allen, director of BizEventz for the CNY Business Journal, stated, “It is truly an honor to present Maria with this award. Her leadership has not only shaped The Reading League into the powerhouse it is today, but it has also made a significant difference in the lives of students and educators across the country. Maria’s vision and impact are immeasurable, and we proudly celebrate her accomplishments.”

The Reading League provides training and support for educators and school leaders with a focus on evidence-based approaches to teaching reading. More information about their work can be found at thereadingleague.org.
