Three Kansas elementary schools have been recognized as 2025 National Blue Ribbon Schools, according to an announcement from Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson.

The schools honored in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category are McLean Science Technology Magnet in Wichita USD 259, Jefferson West Elementary School in Jefferson West USD 340, and Sterling Grade School in Sterling USD 376. This distinction is awarded to schools that rank among the highest performers in their state based on state assessments or nationally standardized tests.

Previously, the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Schools program recognized public and private elementary, middle, and high schools for overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups. The program was discontinued by the federal department in September.

Educators at Blue Ribbon schools use data-driven instruction methods, engage in ongoing professional development, and collaborate with families and communities to help students achieve their potential.

“We are truly honored that our school, our teachers, and our students are recognized as a Blue Ribbon School,” said Tina Young, principal of McLean Science Technology Magnet. “Our magnet program offers unique learning opportunities that fosters students’ curiosity with hands-on integration of science and technology in all of our classes, inspiring them to be the leaders of tomorrow.”

Wes Sturgeon, principal of Jefferson West Elementary, stated: “Our staff, students, and families are proudly recognizing this achievement, which highlights the dedication and collaboration that define the Jefferson West community.” He added: “This recognition represents years of hard work, high expectations, and a shared belief that every child can succeed. We are proud to represent our district and community on the public stage.”

Jamie Burtner, principal of Sterling Grade School said: “This prestigious award reflects the dedication of our outstanding teachers and staff, who work tirelessly to ensure every student thrives both personally and academically. We have a proud history of achievement, previously earning recognition as a National ESEA Distinguished School in 2024 and 2016, and a National Blue Ribbon School in 2018. We are humbled to once again receive national recognition that celebrates the heart and soul of our entire school, parents and community.”

This marks the first time McLean Science Technology Magnet has received this honor; it is also the sixth school within Wichita USD 259 to earn this award. For Jefferson West Elementary School (USD 340), this is its first time receiving such recognition.

Since 1983—including these most recent honorees—a total of 167 public schools and six private schools across Kansas have been designated as Blue Ribbon Schools.
