More than 170,000 students in Arizona have registered for tutoring through Khanmigo, an artificial intelligence-based education system. According to Superintendent Tom Horne, this represents the highest rate of AI tutoring usage by percentage of student population among all states.
“Having more than 170,000 students already signed up for tutoring through Khanmigo, the premier AI education system in the country, is a significant milestone for education in Arizona. Our state has the highest rate of usage by percentage of student population among all states. That is a tremendous accomplishment,” Horne said.
Last year, Horne directed the Arizona Department of Education to allocate $1.5 million to provide schools with access to Khanmigo. The platform uses an interactive approach that encourages students to solve problems independently rather than simply giving answers.
“Khanmigo does not simply provide answers. It engages students by asking questions that guide them to discover solutions on their own. This approach delivers rigorous, individualized Socratic-style tutoring — a proven method for improving academic outcomes,” Horne explained.
In addition to supporting students, the Department is also providing resources for teachers through the Arizona Digital Educators Library (ADEL), an online platform powered by AI that helps educators develop lesson plans and classroom materials aligned with state standards. More than 4,000 users are enrolled in ADEL and 50 ambassadors are working to expand its use across Arizona.
