Attorney General Dave Sunday has announced that Pennsylvania law enforcement agencies have seized over 50 million doses of fentanyl in 2025, marking a significant increase in efforts to combat the trafficking of the synthetic opioid. The seizures were made by the Office of Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation during ongoing investigations across the state, with most occurring in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
The operations not only led to the confiscation of fentanyl but also resulted in arrests and the recovery of other illegal drugs and firearms. Sunday credited collaboration among law enforcement and community leaders for this progress.
"We are not claiming victory with this record number of fentanyl seizures - we are sending a message to the predatory dealers perpetrating this flow of deadly fentanyl into our communities," Attorney General Sunday said. "That message is: your days are numbered. I am a strong proponent of treatment and recovery options that provide second chances for those who embrace help, but I am also a firm believer in stopping the flow of deadly poisons with aggressive enforcement and prosecution efforts."
Sunday was joined by several officials at public announcements in both major cities, including Kevin Bethel, Philadelphia Police Commissioner; Adam Geer, Chief Public Safety Director for Philadelphia; Jack Stollsteimer, Delaware County District Attorney; Kevin Steele, Montgomery County District Attorney; and Patrick Molloy, Police Chief of Abington Township.
