The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) has instructed the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) to seek a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education regarding certain requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESEA). The request concerns section 1111(b)(2)(C)(iii), which mandates that states using an exception for advanced mathematics in middle school must use students' scores on high school end-of-course mathematics assessments for statewide accountability.
Currently, these requirements call for eighth-grade students who take high school-level math to be measured based on their performance on both the end-of-course assessment during that year and a more advanced math assessment when they take it later in high school.
BESE, through LDOE, is requesting a waiver from these federal rules and related regulations—specifically 34 CFR § 200.5(b)—for a two-year transition period covering the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 academic years.
Members of the public or interested personnel can submit questions or comments about this proposed waiver to Ashley Townsend, Assistant Superintendent for Policy and Governmental Affairs, by emailing [email protected] with “ESEA Waiver” in the subject line by November 21, 2025.
