State Board of Education President Dr. Joshua Michael and State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey M. Wright have responded to the U.S. Department of Education's recent decision to distribute its key functions across four separate federal agencies.

In a joint statement, they said, “We are assessing the impact of the changes announced today on Maryland students, educators, and schools. Without question, we are deeply concerned about the challenges of coordinating efforts with multiple federal agencies. The continued retreat on public education by the federal government has resulted in an inefficient approach to supporting children in public schools.

“However, the Maryland State Department of Education and the State Board of Education remain committed to upholding high standards, ensuring that every child in Maryland public schools receives the support they need and deserve.”

The reorganization at the federal level is expected to affect how states interact with national authorities regarding education policy and resources.
