Governor Jeff Landry and State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley have announced that Louisiana public high school graduates in the Class of 2026 will receive diplomas featuring a commemorative America 250 seal. This initiative marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

“Two hundred and fifty years ago, our Founding Fathers declared America’s independence and launched the greatest nation the world has ever known,” said Governor Jeff Landry. “We want to ensure Louisiana students not only learn that history, but see themselves as part of it. This seal is a meaningful reminder of their role in preserving our freedoms and strengthening our nation.”

The new seal will appear on all diplomas awarded to public high school graduates in 2026. According to Dr. Cade Brumley, “The Class of 2026 will graduate high school at a uniquely historic moment for our country. By placing the America 250 seal on every diploma, we are both celebrating our students and reinforcing Louisiana’s deep commitment to civics education.”

America 250 is a national initiative established by Congress to commemorate the founding of the United States in 2026. Each state, including Louisiana, has set up its own commission to organize programs and events recognizing this milestone.

Louisiana’s America 250 Commission includes Dr. Cade Brumley, LDOE Assistant Superintendent Trey Folse, and BESE member Sandy Holloway.

The addition of the America 250 seal aligns with ongoing efforts in Louisiana to strengthen civics education throughout K-12 schools. In 2022, Louisiana adopted new social studies standards called the Freedom Framework, which emphasizes American history and civic engagement.

Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, students can also earn a Freedom Framework Diploma Endorsement if they achieve Mastery or higher on the LEAP 2025 civics assessment. These students will receive an additional diploma seal and wear red, white, and blue honor cords at graduation.

Louisiana continues its focus on civics through annual events such as Celebrate Freedom Week, held during Constitution Day and Constitution Week. The state partners with organizations like the Reagan Foundation and The National WWII Museum for these statewide activities.
