The President and founder of the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) is urging Texas to create a plan that will include family engagement and will drive change for families.
Founder and President Sharon Darling wrote in a guest column in the Victoria Advocate that it's important to leverage the funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act to develop a plan to help Texas' parents. The plan would be to help with parents; literacy levels, workforce skills and helping caregivers learn with their children, Darling said in the Victoria Advocate. The outcome of the plan would be to stregthen family bonds and help children learn better in school.
For the last 30 years, NCFL had focused on family education, the column said.
"Steps must be taken now to empower parents—both those currently in poverty and those who will fall into it because of the economic shutdown," Darling said in the Victoria Advocate column. "These needs will extend beyond the pandemic."
Darling said in the column that families deserve a supportive infrastructure.
