Highland Park Independent School District issued the following announcement.
HPISD has a tradition of participating in Inclusive Schools Week, a national celebration held each December to bring awareness to the progress schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to all students.
The week of Dec. 7-11 is designated as Inclusive Schools Week (ISW) across the nation and in Highland Park ISD.
Throughout the district, HP students and staff will celebrate how each of our unique differences makes for a stronger learning environment for every student, every day. Students will participate in classroom discussions, activities and events focused on inclusion, acceptance and empathy for others.
Some of the activities include:
reading books about diversity, difference, empathy and understanding
"I feel included when" discussions and activities
adaptive PE lessons
Character Strong lessons focused on this month's trait - empathy
demonstrating empathy activities
Be Like Me virtual field trip
inclusivity word cloud activities
Parents can participate in Inclusive Schools Week by asking their children what they learn every day next week from the lessons designed to create experiences to help students learn about understanding and valuing diversity. Also, follow the district’s social media pages, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to engage with Inclusive Schools Week posts highlighting ISW activities.
Special thanks to the HPISD Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) for its support and help coordinating ISW district events and celebrations. Visit the SEPAC webpage to learn more.
