On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Education introduced a new portal aimed at reducing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in education. This move has been criticized as a threat to programs that support students' access to necessary resources for learning. The initiative is viewed as part of the Trump administration's broader attack on federal civil rights laws.

NEA President Becky Pringle expressed concerns about this development. She said, "As I talk to educators and parents around the country, what I hear from most everyone—regardless of political affiliation or whether they live in rural, urban or suburban America—is that we all want all students to have the opportunities and resources they need to succeed."

Pringle emphasized the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in creating environments where individuals feel comfortable sharing their experiences. These programs provide opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to reach their potential.

She criticized politicians attacking these programs, accusing them of diverting attention from their real agenda: reducing funding for public schools while offering tax cuts for billionaires. Pringle highlighted that over 10,000 civil rights investigations were shut down by the administration, affecting many students with disabilities.

Pringle concluded by urging focus on genuine issues facing public schools and ensuring every child has access to necessary resources. "Let’s not let politicians distract us from the real issues facing public schools," she said.

The National Education Association represents over 3 million educators across various levels of education in the United States.
