On February 17, 2025, EdTrust released a statement from Wil Del Pilar, the organization's senior vice president, addressing a recent "Dear Colleague" letter issued by the U.S. Department of Education. The letter instructs schools and universities to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs or risk losing federal funding.

Del Pilar expressed concern over this directive, which he views as part of a broader agenda supported by President Trump's Project 2025 to undermine public education. He said that the Office of Civil Rights is using scare tactics to dismantle programs that have made progress toward racial and economic justice in education.

"DEI is under attack not because it is failing, but because its principles of advancing access are working," Del Pilar said. He emphasized that DEI programs help close equity gaps and increase graduation rates for traditionally underrepresented students. According to him, these initiatives foster environments where all students can pursue success regardless of their background.

Del Pilar warned that eliminating DEI programs could deepen racial and economic inequities and weaken the nation's workforce. He highlighted that students of color constitute more than half of the K-12 student population and 45% of college enrollments. Removing DEI support could lead to wider achievement gaps.

He also noted the potential loss of over $370 million in federal grants for student mental health services and other support programs if DEI initiatives are cut. This would pose significant challenges for institutions already struggling to provide resources for low-income and first-generation students.

Del Pilar concluded by stating that the fight against DEI elimination is crucial for the future of education in America. "We must not let that happen," he urged.

EdTrust remains committed to advocating for policies that dismantle racial and economic barriers in education through research and community engagement.
