In response to the challenges faced by Bridgeport Public Schools, Education Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker has announced the formation of a Technical Assistance Team. This initiative, authorized by the Connecticut State Board of Education on January 22, 2025, aims to implement necessary interventions within the district.
The team will focus on improving student performance, particularly for those eligible for special education services, and enhancing district operations. They will also provide support in financial management and instructional processes. Regular updates will be submitted to ensure accountability.
Commissioner Russell-Tucker has also approved the Bridgeport Board of Education's selection of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) for governance training. "The Technical Assistance Team consists of individuals with expertise in public education who bring valuable experience in district operations, finance, special education, and governance," said Commissioner Russell-Tucker. "A well-functioning Bridgeport Board of Education (BBE) will be key to ensuring stability and progress in the district."
The team includes Dr. David Abbey, Ed Arum, Dr. Ingrid M. Canady, and David Erwin, each bringing extensive experience in their respective fields.
To engage the community, SERC is organizing Listening Sessions with educators and students. An entrance conference between Bridgeport’s Acting Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery and the Technical Assistance Team is scheduled to outline objectives and responsibilities.
This collaboration is set to continue through the end of this calendar year.
