Superintendent Ryan Walters has announced his intention to promote a private industry alternative to traditional teachers' unions, which he describes as left-leaning and detrimental to public education. The Freedom Foundation has introduced the Teacher Freedom Alliance (TFA), a program designed to offer liability coverage for teachers, advocate for historically accurate curricula, and provide professional development opportunities. This initiative aims to reward teachers based on proficiency rather than tenure or union affiliation.
"Teachers deserve the ability to be rewarded for being great," stated Walters. He emphasized that educators should not feel pressured into joining organizations that he claims undermine American values. Walters is clear in his stance against educational distractions such as CRT, DEI, gender ideology, and antisemitism.
Walters supports measures like merit pay and signing bonuses to recognize teaching excellence and advocates for giving teachers more control over classroom discipline. He notes that these approaches have faced opposition from traditional teachers' unions but anticipates stronger efforts against them with TFA's support.
"There's new leadership in the White House and we're going to make education great again with the help of the Freedom Foundation and Secretary McMahon," Walters added.
