Ryan Walters Superintendent | Oklahoma Department of Education

Superintendent Ryan Walters of the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) has emphasized the department's dedication to student safety by implementing measures against misconduct within the education system. Since his appointment, Walters has directed 94 investigations that have resulted in several accountability actions: 35 voluntary teacher certification surrenders, 10 revocations, six denials of new certificates, and 46 suspensions.

Walters stated, "We are sending a clear message: Oklahoma will not tolerate misconduct in our schools." He emphasized that their proactive measures aim to ensure classrooms remain secure environments conducive to learning.

The OSDE has resolved 87 percent of over 3,000 complaints reported through Awareity, reflecting a commitment to addressing issues promptly. Additionally, partnerships with organizations like the Brendon McLarty Foundation and Public Consulting Group have strengthened school safety efforts. The Office of School Safety and Security has conducted more than 300 hours of training since 2024 on topics such as threat assessments, de-escalation techniques, and awareness about human trafficking and drugs.

These initiatives provide schools with essential tools for maintaining safe learning spaces. The OSDE continues to enhance its investigative units and training programs to further prevent and respond to potential threats.
