The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has commenced the application process for the 2026 Colorado Teacher of the Year award. This annual initiative aims to honor teachers who exhibit educational excellence, leadership, and a commitment to student success and community involvement.

During the nomination phase for the 2026 Teacher of the Year, over 1,800 nominations were received. All nominees have been invited to apply. Additionally, educators working in state-approved or accredited K-12 schools in Colorado who intend to continue teaching in the 2026-2027 school year can also apply.

“This is more than an award - it is an opportunity to elevate and celebrate the voices of our educators and students. We are looking forward to hearing from Colorado teachers through their applications," stated Education Commissioner Susana Córdova.

Applicants are required to respond to two brief questions, submit a short video response, provide a resume, and include a letter from their district superintendent or building principal. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, April 23. The department will offer virtual office hours in April for those needing assistance.

The selection committee will review applications in spring and announce semi-finalists in July 2025. These semi-finalists will undergo further application steps before finalists are revealed in September 2025. The winner will be announced in October 2025.

Janet Damon, who was named Colorado Teacher of the Year for 2025 said: “Being Colorado’s Teacher of the Year has been a transformational experience for me, and I encourage other educators to take the chance and apply!”

The recipient of the 2026 award will receive $5,000 sponsored by the Boettcher Foundation and become eligible for consideration as National Teacher of the Year for 2026.

This program is supported by various partners including the Boettcher Foundation, Colorado Education Association, Adams State University, Blue Bell Ice Cream, and Colorado PTA.
