Representatives from various education sectors and government levels convened at the White House for a ceremony marking the signing of a significant executive order by President Trump. The order directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take legal steps to reduce the Department of Education's scope while ensuring the continuation of programs and civil rights protections.
The event included students and faculty from two notable schools: Liguori Academy in Philadelphia and Friendship Public Charter School in Washington, DC. Their participation underscores a shared belief among educational leaders that politics should not interfere with educational excellence. Pat Brantley, CEO of Friendship Charter, remarked, “I may not agree with every policy of any administration, but this much I know in my heart: when we trust our educators and empower our parents, our children thrive – and when our children thrive, our nation succeeds.”
Jeanne Allen from the Center for Education Reform (CER) commented on the significance of the Executive Order. She stated, “We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to participate in this exciting event celebrating the roles of states in expanding education opportunities and putting parents back in the driver’s seat.” Allen elaborated on how local innovation can flourish when free from federal oversight: “Just as SpaceX transformed space travel when bureaucratic constraints were lifted, education can now be revolutionized by empowering those closest to students: parents and educators.”
Allen further emphasized that this order represents an opportunity for innovative policies that could reshape education for future generations.
