Goochland teacher receives honor as regional teacher of year

Rachel Tate, a history teacher at Goochland High School in Goochland County Public Schools, has been honored as the 2026 Virginia Regional Teacher of the Year for Superintendent Region 1 by the Virginia Department of Education.

Grace Creasey, President of the State Board of Education, praised Tate's dedication: “Mrs. Tate’s dedication to history and her students at Goochland High School is truly inspiring. Being named the 2026 Virginia Regional Teacher of the Year for Region 1 is a testament to her passion, innovation, and commitment to shaping the future through making history and civic education come alive in her classroom and beyond.”

Goochland County Public Schools Superintendent Michael Cromartie also expressed his admiration: “I am thrilled to celebrate Mrs. Rachel Tate as Teacher of the Year for Region 1! Rachel represents all of Goochland’s outstanding teachers, exemplifying the dedication, passion, and innovation that make our schools places where students thrive. Her unwavering commitment to student success, coupled with her abilities to inspire both curiosity and confidence in her classroom, makes Rachel an invaluable asset to our community.” He highlighted her Veteran's Project as an impactful learning experience for students.

Senator Luther Cifers extended his congratulations: "I extend my sincere congratulations to Rachel Tate on this remarkable achievement. Her dedication to educating and inspiring our children exemplifies the profound impact that committed educators have on future generations."

Tate's approach combines a love for American history with innovative teaching methods aimed at fostering curiosity and critical thinking among students. She engages them through creative lessons that bring historical events to life.

In addition to teaching history, Tate supports student leadership as faculty sponsor for the GHS Student Council Association. She guides elected student leaders in addressing regional educational issues annually.

Brian Hahn, Principal of Goochland High School, lauded Tate's contributions: “I am ecstatic to acknowledge Mrs. Rachel Tate as Teacher of the Year for Region 1! Mrs. Tate’s wealth of knowledge and real-life instruction that takes place in her classroom daily is truly amazing."

The announcement was made during a surprise visit from several officials including Grace Creasey and Senator Cifers. As one of eight regional Teachers of the Year nominees for the Mary V. Bicouvaris Virginia Teacher of the Year Award, Tate will participate in a Teacher Advisory Council with other nominees.

The final selection for Virginia Teacher of the Year will be announced in early May.
