Commissioner of Education Angélica Infante-Green | Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Angélica Infante-Green has responded to the President's recent Executive Order aimed at closing the United States Department of Education. In her statement, Infante-Green emphasized that despite federal changes, Rhode Island will continue its commitment to providing high-quality education for all children.

"At the Rhode Island Department of Education, our work has always been – and will continue to be – guided by what is best for our children," she stated. She acknowledged that while Congressional action is necessary to formally close the department, the proposed changes could hinder its operations and diminish essential federal support relied upon by students, teachers, and school leaders nationwide.

Infante-Green highlighted the increased need for support in schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on children's academic and social-emotional needs. "Our school communities need and deserve more support during this critical time – not less," she said. She stressed the importance of enhancing support rather than cutting programs that benefit both children and educators.

In her closing remarks, Infante-Green reaffirmed Rhode Island's dedication to advocating for resources from the U.S. Department of Education. "Here in the Ocean State, we will not waver and will continue to put our children first," she declared. The commissioner assured that RIDE remains committed to collaborating with local, state, and federal partners to ensure supportive learning environments for all students.
