The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has introduced the My Sister's Keeper initiative, announced at a launch event held at Bronx Community College. Commissioner Betty A. Rosa emphasized that this program is designed to address the unique challenges faced by girls and young women of color in STEM education. The initiative aims to reduce gender disparities in STEM fields while promoting diversity and leadership skills among future female leaders.
Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. stated, “The success of NYS My Brother’s Keeper demonstrates the transformational power of targeted support for boys and young men of color. However, the inequities we aim to dismantle extend beyond gender. Today’s launch of New York State My Sister’s Keeper is a significant step toward leveling the playing field for girls and young women of color to pursue careers in STEM fields."
Commissioner Rosa highlighted that the initiative marks "a major milestone for girls and young women of color across New York State with aspirations in STEM related fields." She noted that participants will gain exposure to STEM through academic support, mentorship, and hands-on experience.
My Sister's Keeper (MSK) is structured as a multi-faceted program focused on empowering its participants by engaging them in community-based service-learning projects, preparing them for future success, and providing practical STEM experiences. It includes partnerships with local businesses, educational organizations, and colleges to offer real-world applications of STEM learning.
To further support these students' career pursuits in STEM fields, MSK will offer workshops focusing on life skills such as resume building and interview strategies alongside career exploration activities.
Additionally, MSK plans to enhance classroom learning with interactive activities and educational trips to labs, tech companies, and universities. These experiences are intended to deepen students' understanding of STEM subjects while maintaining their interest.
