The National Education Association (NEA) has announced Andy Markus, head custodian at Draper Park Middle School in Draper, Utah, as the 2025 NEA Education Support Professional (ESP) of the Year. Markus has been part of the Canyons School District for 13 years, previously serving as assistant custodian at Midvale Elementary and head custodian at Bella Vista Elementary before his current role.
"NEA and its three million members are proud to recognize Andy’s dedication to his students, his school and his union," said NEA President Becky Pringle. She praised Markus for being a welcoming presence and inspiring students to improve themselves. His efforts were recognized last year when he received the 2024 Utah ESP of the Year award.
The award highlights exceptional contributions by education support professionals nationwide. These professionals include bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, paraeducators, and others who play vital roles in public education.
Mike Evans, President of the Utah School Employees Association, expressed admiration for Markus: "I’ve had the privilege of working with Andy for many years, and he’s consistently been an exceptional leader."
Markus will now serve as an ambassador for ESPs across the country. He emphasized that his work extends beyond maintaining school facilities: “It’s about fostering a community where students and staff feel proud to be.”
Markus's initiatives include an after-school program that helps improve student behavior and "Andy Talk," which provides students with a chance to discuss their challenges with him while he works.
Erin Longacre from Draper Park Middle School's Parent Teacher Student Association described Markus as someone who is always ready to help: “He’s the ‘What do you need,’ when you’re looking for help.”
As president of the Canyons Educational Support Professionals Association and a board member of USEA, Markus actively advocates for ESP rights across Utah. Britt Wolf from Hillcrest High School highlighted Markus's commitment during negotiations affecting Nebo School District employees.
Markus was one of five finalists this year alongside Amy Evans from Illinois; Beryl Torrence from North Carolina; Becky Marszalek from Pennsylvania; and Alyce Holmes Pope from Virginia.
