Lisa Coons Superintendent of Public Instruction | Virginia Department Of Education
The Virginia Department of Education has revealed the state's finalists for the 2025 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This award is recognized as the highest national honor for K-12 educators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It highlights teachers who possess a strong understanding of their subjects and can effectively inspire student success.
Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction Emily Anne Gullickson stated, "Virginia is proud to celebrate our outstanding teachers who have been selected as finalists for this year’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Their dedication, innovation, and passion for STEM education inspire the next generation of problem-solvers and critical thinkers." She added, "We congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition of academic excellence and are proud to have them represent the Commonwealth as they are considered by the national selection committee."
Finalists were chosen by review committees organized by the Virginia Department of Education. Nominees needed to demonstrate substantial content knowledge and exceptional teaching abilities.
The award program is managed by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House. It alternates annually between recognizing teachers from Grades K-6 and those from Grades 7-12. Each year, up to 110 exemplary teachers may be honored by the President.
A national review committee will evaluate applications from state finalists, with winners announced later by the White House. National awardees receive a $10,000 unrestricted grant from the National Science Foundation, a presidential certificate, and participate in various recognition events and professional development activities in Washington D.C.
