Frank Edelblut Commissioner | New Hampshire Department of Education
Today, the New Hampshire Department of Education (NHED) announced the launch of the New Hampshire Literacy Landscape Survey. This survey is a crucial component in the creation of the State Literacy Plan, aimed at evaluating the state's literacy education status.
NHED is conducting this needs assessment survey to identify critical needs and opportunities in achieving the State Literacy Plan's objectives. Public participation is crucial to ensure all students receive the necessary support for reading success, and educators have the required resources and training.
The survey invites participation from a broad spectrum, including educators, school leaders, parents, caregivers, non-profits, and community members with literacy education experience. This initiative is part of NHED’s Leaning into Literacy, which encompasses a campaign promoting youth reading, a professional training program in Lexia’s LETRS, and equipping new educators with resources aligned with the Science of Reading.
"Strong literacy skills are crucial for the future success of our youth, and we are committed to making sure that every child in New Hampshire has the support they need to become a proficient reader – and foster a love of reading for the rest of their lifetime. Survey participation from parents, educators and community members will play a critical role in shaping our collective efforts to improve literacy outcomes for children across the state," said Commissioner Frank Edelblut of NHED.
The survey seeks to gather important information on professional development needs, curricula, resources, and assessment and support tools in literacy education. With the state's locally controlled literacy instruction approach, where districts have unique strategies, educator insights are valuable in identifying effective resources and methods for statewide application.
Participation in the survey is voluntary, taking approximately five minutes. Responses will remain anonymous and confidential, forming part of a collective dataset. The survey closes on June 3, 2025, with results to be made publicly available.
