Austin A. Davis 35th Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania | Pennsylvania Department Of Education
Governor Josh Shapiro has made an appeal against the USDA's decision to withdraw $13 million in funding allocated to Pennsylvania through the Local Food Purchasing Assistance Program. This development prompted a roundtable discussion, chaired by Lt. Governor Austin Davis and Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The event gathered food bank leaders, farmers, and stakeholders to evaluate the challenges anticipated from the federal funding cuts.
The group also contemplated the potential benefits of proposals in Governor Shapiro's 2025-26 budget, aimed at enhancing Pennsylvania food banks, the regional food system, and supporting local farmers. Lt. Governor Davis emphasized the administration’s commitment to these sectors, saying, "Investing in Pennsylvania farmers and helping them do what they do best -- feed people -- is an investment in our future." He highlighted initiatives to increase backing for agriculture while assisting families, students, and seniors. "These are proven programs that work. They're the definition of win-win - farmers get paid to produce food. Folks in need can eat fresh, healthy food," Davis continued.
The session featured several speakers, including Lisa Scales from the Pittsburgh Food Bank, Deputy Secretary Pham, Art King of Harvest Valley Farms, Representative Emily Kinkead, and Secretary Russell Redding.
