Dr. Michael F. Rice Michigan superintendent of public instruction | Michigan Department of Education
The latest #proudMIeducator video highlights Mr. Mike Rumbell, a longstanding high school band teacher with over 53 years of teaching experience in Michigan. Serving Northville High School in Northville Public Schools, Rumbell is only the third band director in the Wayne County school's history. Highlighting the significance of music in education, Rumbell remarked, "Music for its own sake is a real good thing. It’s important. It’s as important as any other subject is, and for most students that are in the program, that’s why they go to school."
State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice commended Rumbell's extensive service, stating, "Music education can be a gateway to a wide variety of experiences that lead to a brighter future for Michigan students. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) appreciates and salutes Mr. Mike Rumbell for his long-standing commitment to our children."
The MDE continues to focus on programs that draw skilled and passionate teachers, part of the state's strategic education objectives. The efforts to resolve teacher shortages include scholarships, stipends, loan repayments, grants, and other support initiatives aimed at fostering teaching careers in Michigan.
Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has featured various educators and supporters, celebrating their dedication to education. Those interested in nominating a Michigan educator for a future video feature can contact MDE through MDE-PME@Michigan.gov.
