The New York State Library, the largest of its kind in the nation, marks National Library Week by highlighting the critical contribution of libraries to community empowerment. National Library Week, first celebrated in 1958 and sponsored by the American Library Association, is intended to honor libraries, librarians, and library workers. This year, it occurs amidst a federal Executive Order aiming to eliminate the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which is significant as the New York State Library depends on $8.1 million of IMLS funding to provide essential services to New Yorkers.

New York State Librarian Lauren Moore expressed, "Amid the threat of federal funding cuts, it's more important than ever to recognize the fundamental role libraries play. Libraries are not only hubs for learning and creativity, but they also offer critical services such as free Wi-Fi, digital collections, and impactful community programs."

Interim Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Education Michael Mastroianni stated, "The New York State Library is a crown jewel of the New York State Education Department, the State of New York, and our nation. Its exceptional collections, innovative services, and world-class staff set the standard for excellence."

The New York State Library presides over more than 7,000 libraries and 72 library systems across New York, providing access to over 20 million items. Several key divisions within the library serve various roles: the Division of Library Development, the Research Library, and the Talking Book and Braille Library.

The Library is hosting several free programs to honor National Library Week, including a webinar on the Personal History Initiative, a "Storytime with the State Librarian" event, a "Stuffie Sleepover Drop-Off" event, and a "Tasting History" webinar exploring historical foodways.

Founded in 1818, the New York State Library is a hub for researchers, educators, patrons, lawmakers, and the broader public. It manages a broad range of collections and serves as a Regional Depository for federal publications. Further information on its programs and collections is available on its website.
