Officials from various agencies in Pennsylvania are urging residents to prepare for the upcoming federal REAL ID enforcement, which begins on May 7. The initiative is a part of the Shapiro Administration's efforts to ensure that Pennsylvanians are informed and equipped for the enforcement.

While obtaining a REAL ID in Pennsylvania is optional, starting May 7, travelers will need either a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID card, or another form of federally acceptable identification, such as a valid passport or military ID, to board domestic flights and access military bases or other federal facilities requiring identification.

Since 2019, over 2.6 million Pennsylvanians have acquired a REAL ID driver's license or ID card. PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, "We know that people look forward to traveling with friends and family, but after May 7, if you don't have a REAL ID or a passport, you won't be able to board a domestic flight. We're strongly encouraging everyone to make sure you have what you need to travel before you arrive at the airport, especially if you already have flights planned for the summer."

Speakers at the recent announcement included Derek Martin, CEO of Erie International Airport, and Jim Garrity, AAA's Director of Public Affairs for AAA East Central.
