Rachel Candaso, a middle school teacher from Pitt County and AVID coordinator, has been named the 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made during an awards luncheon at the Umstead Hotel in Cary, where Candaso and eight other regional finalists were honored.

State Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green praised Candaso, saying, "Every student in North Carolina deserves a teacher like Ms. Candaso. It is clear that she is committed to a vision of comprehensive, intentional student preparation, empowering educators, families and communities to ensure that all students are poised for success."

Candaso also holds the Pitt County Schools’ Teacher of the Year title and is involved in the Teach for America organization. She said she was drawn to Northeast North Carolina to help address disparities in resources between rural and urban schools.

“By continuously learning, leading and innovating, I continue to strive to make a meaningful impact both within my school and in the broader community,” Candaso said, highlighting her commitment to a more equitable educational system.

Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Program Officer at the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Alfred Mays, noted, "Rachel Candaso embodies the spirit of leadership and excellence that defines the Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year."

Candaso shared a broader message, saying, "Every teacher holds the power to shape the future by preparing students to excel in an ever-evolving society."

During the 2025-26 school year, Candaso will represent and advocate for teachers across North Carolina, participating in various professional learning opportunities and events. In addition, she will receive several awards and support from various organizations.

The recognition program, celebrating outstanding teachers since 1970, also honored eight regional finalists. These finalists include Hannah Moon from New Hanover County Schools, Tamika J. Farmer from Edgecombe County Schools, and others from across the state.
