The application period for Louisiana's LA GATOR scholarship has concluded, with the Louisiana Department of Education reporting over 39,000 total applications for the 2025–2026 academic year. Nearly 35,000 applicants have been deemed eligible, but the number of students who receive scholarships will depend on legislative funding decisions. Over 81% of applicants come from families at or below 250% of the federal poverty level, and close to 3,000 are students with disabilities.

Governor Jeff Landry has requested just over $93 million from the state budget to fund the program, which would allow approximately 12,000 students to benefit. "These astounding numbers show just how vital the Gator Scholarship is to Louisianans," said Gov. Landry. He emphasized the program’s role in empowering parents, especially those with children with disabilities and low-income families, to choose the best educational settings for their children's needs and values.

The process of student applications ran from March 1 to April 15, culminating in 39,189 submissions. Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education, commented on the large number of applications: “Louisiana families are making it clear—they want more educational options and the freedom to choose what works best for their children.”

Scholarships will be allocated based on established priorities if funding is insufficient. Factors include current participation in Louisiana’s scholarship programs, disability status, family income, and sibling status in existing programs. The submission time of applications will be a determining factor if multiple students fall within the same priority group.

The LA GATOR program requires an extension of its management contract through June 2026, which is pending approval by the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget.

In preparation for the transition, the Louisiana Scholarship Program (LSP), set to end in June 2025, will see eligible families move to the LA GATOR program. An estimated 91% of current LSP families have applied for LA GATOR, with committed funding ensuring these students remain prioritized.

Governor Landry’s budget request includes a $43 million allocation to support at least 5,000 current LSP students, maintaining their scholarships until they complete their current school’s final grade or transfer schools.

The LA GATOR Scholarship Program is Louisiana's first educational scholarship account, signed into law by Governor Landry. It provides funds for various educational services, enhancing the state’s multiple educational options. Updates and communication regarding the applications will proceed through the Odyssey platform and direct emails.
