State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder participated in the Purple Up Day for Military Kids celebration at Freedom Elementary in Cheyenne last Friday. This occasion is part of the Month of the Military Child (MOMC) observed in April to acknowledge the contributions of military children and their families to national security.

During the event, Degenfelder emphasized the significance of military families, stating, "We live in the greatest country in the world because of devoted servicemen and women and their families who make the sacrifice to serve. I am grateful for the efforts of our Wyoming schools, especially our Purple Star Schools, that ensure successful transitions and support for all military-connected students."

The assembly was initiated by Freedom Elementary Principal Chad Delbridge, followed by remarks from Colonel Galbert of the 90th Missile Wing, U.S. Air Force. The event highlighted participants of the Student 2 Student program, which helps new students adapt positively to their environment. Winners of the MOMC essay contest were also acknowledged, and the school's anthem was performed.

The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) is actively acknowledging MOMC throughout April. An official proclamation by Governor Mark Gordon has designated April as MOMC in Wyoming. This signing, which had attendance from WDE staff, educators, and military families, was broadcast live on Facebook. Following this, the Cheyenne Central High School Color Guard presented the National Anthem in front of the Wyoming State Capitol.

The Wyoming Purple Star School Program aims to provide necessary support for military-connected students, ensuring their educational and emotional well-being during transitions. Additionally, Wyoming's membership in the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) assists in overcoming educational hurdles faced by children of active duty service members, including issues like enrollment and graduation.
