In a move to support military families, the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has launched a new section on its website. This initiative, announced this April during the Month of the Military Child, aims to back the educational success of military-connected students and their families in the state. Developed in collaboration with Barksdale Air Force Base, the online hub offers centralized resources for these families.
“This new online resource reflects our commitment to ensuring every child—especially those whose families serve our country—has access to a high-quality education and a smooth school experience in Louisiana,” stated Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education. He highlighted the partnership with Barksdale as a means to boost outreach and support for military families.
The resource hub offers straightforward access to key information and tools to aid military families with school transitions. This includes assistance from enrollment to meeting graduation requirements, designed to ease the frequent school changes military families face.
Colonel Michael Maginness, Barksdale Air Force Base's Installation Commander, also expressed his support for the initiative. “Our military families face a litany of pervasive challenges innate to the military lifestyle. They deserve our unwavering support in accessing high-quality, affordable, and special needs accommodating educational resources to provide them with every chance to thrive and excel,” he said. Colonel Maginness commended the local partnerships and expressed confidence in the new hub's ability to benefit military families in Louisiana.
The resource hub features several key components:
- Advanced enrollment guidance for military children entering Louisiana schools
- Quick access links to school directories, educational options, and special services
- Spotlight on Purple Star Schools in Louisiana for their support of military students
- Information on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children
There are more than 12,000 military-connected students in Louisiana public schools. The LDOE remains focused on ensuring these students have a successful educational journey. The newly launched resource is available at doe.louisiana.org and will be updated regularly.
