Deborah A. Frison, Deputy Commissioner School Improvement and Support | Nebraska Department of Education
The Nebraska Department of Education awarded 70 students with the Distinguished World Language Scholar Award during World Language Week 2025. These students have shown strong leadership in language learning, dedication to their studies, appreciation for cultural diversity, and competent communication skills. Nominated by their teachers, each student submitted a portfolio highlighting their accomplishments.
Additionally, the NDE World Language Education introduced the Student Language Spotlight Award this year, honoring 29 students for outstanding evidence of learning in world language classrooms throughout Nebraska. This new award emphasizes language proficiency and cultural understanding.
Averie Andersen, a Distinguished World Language Scholar, stated, “I believe learning a world language is crucial for connecting cultures, opening opportunities to form new relationships, and gaining knowledge about how the world works.”
The department encourages all students to participate in the 2026 Nebraska World Language Week, scheduled from February 9th to 15th, to celebrate the influence of language, discover its significance, and engage with cultures globally.
