Dr. Brian L. Maher, Commissioner | Nebraska Department of Education
The Nebraska Department of Education marks National Afterschool Professional Appreciation Week from April 21 to April 25, highlighting the contributions of educators and staff engaged in afterschool programs across the state. These programs are essential to the academic and social-emotional development of Nebraska's youth, promoting environments where students can thrive.
Afterschool programs offer a variety of activities beyond regular school hours, including tutoring, STEM projects, arts, crafts, sports, and leadership initiatives. Through these activities, students not only delve into their interests but also forge social connections and acquire life skills.
Principal Heather Bebout from Schuyler emphasized the dedication of her staff: “At Schuyler’s Warrior Academy, our 21st CCLC program is thriving thanks to the dedication and creativity of staff members Kimmi, Guadalupe, and Mickaela. These incredible educators pour their hearts into creating a welcoming and enriching environment for our students every day. Whether they’re guiding students through the Kindness Club—encouraging them to spread positivity throughout the school—or digging into hands-on learning with our Gardening Club, their impact is felt far beyond the classroom walls. Their efforts help students grow not just academically, but socially and emotionally, and the afterschool program has become a valuable support for both families and the broader Schuyler community. Warrior Academy is a place where students feel seen, safe, and inspired—and that’s all because of the amazing people behind it.”
Afterschool initiatives support not only students but also working families, providing children with secure environments while their parents fulfill work obligations. The week-long celebration urges schools, community organizations, and families to acknowledge the efforts of afterschool professionals.
This observance underscores the vital role these professionals serve in paving the way for Nebraska's future, fostering continual support and mentorship to help children and communities prosper.
