President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders concerning K-12 education, which has prompted a response from American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten. Weingarten critiqued the administration’s approach, suggesting that despite advocating for local control, the administration intends to influence education by selectively determining beneficiaries.

Weingarten discussed the workforce executive order, noting a similarity to initiatives supported by President Joe Biden and former Secretaries Gina Raimondo and Julie Su, which involve pre-apprenticeship pathways starting in high school. Highlighting a career and technical education high school model launched in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, she emphasized the importance of collaboration with educators in developing such pathways.

In contrast, Weingarten criticized the executive order on artificial intelligence, calling it a strategy to allow tech companies, with insufficient safeguards, access to schools. She argued the order would force districts to invest in unproven software while overall funding is expected to be cut. She expressed concerns about neglecting enhancements needed for infrastructure, such as broadband in high-needs areas.

Weingarten acknowledged the potential positive role of AI in education while highlighting risks like disinformation and privacy infringements. She contended that the order favors tech industry interests over investing in classroom resources designed by knowledgeable educators.

Addressing the discipline order, Weingarten advocated for a balanced approach that empowers teachers while addressing disparities in disciplinary actions affecting Black and brown students. She reaffirmed the obligation to assist teachers in supporting students, expressing readiness to collaborate with anyone committed to this goal.

Randi Weingarten serves as President, with Fedrick C. Ingram as Secretary-Treasurer and Evelyn DeJesus as Executive Vice President of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO.
