Three school districts in Michigan have been awarded $75 million in consolidation grants from the Michigan Department of Education. These funds aim to enhance the utilization of resources, modernize school infrastructure, and improve learning environments. The districts receiving the grants are Flint Community Schools, North Central Area Schools, and Union City Community Schools.
The grants align with a study by the School Finance Research Foundation, which highlights the need for a $23 billion investment in Michigan's school infrastructure over the next decade.
State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice said, "These consolidation grants will be transformative for the three local school districts by helping to modernize school buildings, reduce square footage, and better meet the needs of their students and staffs.” Dr. Rice added, "The School Finance Research Foundation study and the large number of districts that applied for the consolidation grants demonstrate the great demand for addressing Michigan school infrastructure."
Funds for this initiative derive from Section 12d in a state fiscal year 2024 supplemental package, approved alongside the fiscal year 2025 budget. The three districts chosen for the competitive grants are facing declining enrollment and the challenge of updating aging school buildings.
Flint Community Schools will receive more than $35.9 million to close four underutilized schools, reducing their number of active buildings from 11 to seven. They plan to construct a new high school and update existing facilities. "These investments are not just about bricks and mortar. They're about our children, our future, and our commitment to excellence," stated Superintendent Mr. Kevelin Jones.
Union City Community Schools will get over $23.6 million, enabling them to consolidate from three buildings into two. This will include the renovation of existing facilities and the demolition of a middle school. "These funds coupled with additional dollars from our voters will put us in a strong position for many years to come," commented Superintendent Mr. Chris Katz.
North Central Area Schools will use more than $15.4 million to consolidate into a single building, offering modern amenities and technology. Superintendent Dr. Travis Depuydt expressed gratitude for the grant, noting it secures a legacy of success and stability.
The grants are expected to help address the state’s school infrastructure needs and improve learning environments in line with Michigan's Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.
