Renee Nugent KSDE Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Learning Services | Kansas State Department of Education

On April 24, 2025, the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education. This correspondence came in response to a request from April 3rd concerning state compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and associated diversity, equity, and inclusion regulations. The reason for this is to ensure the continued receipt of federal funding.

The letter serves as an assurance to the U.S. Department of Education that both the KSDE and all Local Education Agencies (LEAs) in Kansas adhere to federal anti-discrimination laws. Acting as the State Education Agency, the KSDE submitted documents confirming their compliance with federal non-discrimination laws, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

KSDE mandates an annual submission of assurances from LEAs, affirming their compliance with federal and state non-discrimination statutes and regulations, particularly Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Dr. Randy Watson, the Kansas Education Commissioner, emphasized the agency's commitment by stating, "As public stewards of education in Kansas, we take seriously our responsibility to follow the law and maintain the trust of our communities. Our agency remains committed to ensuring that federal laws are respected and that all Kansas schools operate within the legal framework."
